BANK HOLD-UP
EDENDALE SENSATION
MANAGER'S EVIDENCE

INVERCARGILL, This Day. As a sequel to the Edendale bank sensation, William Leonard Brewer, a single man, aged 24, and Maurice Patrick Duffey, married, aged 27, were charged to-day with breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime.
Eobert Archibald, manager of the Bank of New South AVales, stated that he was reading in the kitchen at about 11 p.m. when the door suddenly swfung open and he saw a rifle barrel coming round the corner. The man holding it was all in black, and he turned towards, witness. Witness then saw another figure. The first man called out, "Don't move." "Witness's wife started to scream, and the second man attacked her. She was struck on the head, and rushed out, followed by the man with the rifle. Witness came to grips with the other man, who had a sandbag-, which burst. Witness aroused the neighbours, one of whom found a loaded rifle which had been discharged. The window in the front sitting-room had been pushed up.
There is a large number of witnesses, and the case is proceeding.
