ORGANISED VIOLENCE

INSTRUCTIONS TO POLICE

CALCUTTA, 4th February. The Bombay Government has decided ta adopt drastic measures to deal with organised violence, which is a serious menace to the peace of the city.

Hitherto the police have, acted with the utmost restraint, and have refrained from firing on aggressive mobs, but instructions have been issued to the police to fire on crowds refusing to disperse.

Replying to questions in the Assembly, Sir Evelyn Hpwell, Foreign Secretary, stated that, since December, 6000 persons, including Congressmen, had been arrested in various^ districts in the North-West Frontier province. The total now in frontier gaols was 10,000.
