ARIKIRA'S EGMONT CUP

The surprising feature oE Arikira's success in the Egmont Jubilee Cup on Wednesday was not his victory but the confidence with which he was supported. Apparently he has shown his connections some useful work since he went out fifth favourite for the Ashhurst Cup and finished out of the money.

The four-year-old sou of Limond had had four races this seasou prior to Wednesday's. At Woodville in December he was rather well backed in the open seven furlongs on the iiual day, aud ran a good race, though unplaced. Then on the first day at Foxtou he was not fancied as much as might have been expected, and was not placed. With the apprentice, J. M. Pine, substituted for K. Keed on the second day, ho was sbetter supported and duly came home an easy winner over the kuiic distance. His fourth start for the term was in the Ashhurst Cup, when, with the apprentice 11. Robinson in the saddle, he finished fourth.■

Judged on his Ashhurst running he looked to have a reasonable chance oi success in the Egmont Cup, but there was hardly enough in the showing to justify his being sent out favourite. The Hawera race proved the easiest of affairs for him, aB he romped away in the straight and beat the next best horse in the field, bhrewd, by three lengths. His time, 2min 7sec, was a race record, bettering Kick Oil's 1923 figures by four-fifths of a second, though-it may be noted that the event has been run at VA miles on only four occasions. '
