"G. AND S." DEVOTEES
A CORDIAL RECEPTION
The Pioneer Club held a very pleasant reception in honour of- several ladies from the Williamson Opera Company yesterday afternoon, when there was a good attendance of members. The rooms were charmingly decorated with beautiful gladioli and brown birch, as well as generous bowls of vivid marigolds. A dolicous tea was served, committee members and others helping to look after the guests. Each of the visitors was presented with, a spray of flowers.
Mrs. J. Perry, in the absence of the president (Miss A. Kane), welcomed the visitors in a charming speech. She spoke- of tho pleasure which it was to the club to met people from other parts of the world, and specially those who had travelled so much. Then allusion was made to tho popularity of Gilbert and Sullivan's work in New Zealand, and the delight with which a season was anticipated. Mrs. Perry told well a quaint little happening in the club on one occasion when they held a "Gilbert and Sullivan" ovoning for the pleasure of members. They had such a "crowded house" that they were asked to hold a second evening! This was done, and the- "menkind" turned up as well, which was felt to be quite an extra compliment. Mrs. Ferry concluded with wishing the visitors not only a successful tour, but a very pleasant visit altogether to New Zealand.
Mrs. Perry was in black georgetto and crinoline hat, and an ermine necklet. . Miss Evelyn Gardiner was in a China blue and whito patterned chiffon frock, and a bluo hat; Miss Mary Hothain %vas in a black crepe do chine two-piece suit and a tricorne hat; Miss Lois Evans (a New Zealander) was in a_ brown ensemble and hat; Miss, Btenning wore a smart lemon yellow costume, and small hat to match; Miss Taito was in a brown suit and draped beret. Later Mrs. Vickery played some delightful piano solos and Miss Florence Penney sang some of her "piano songs," receiving a special encore from the visitors.
