BOOKSELLERS WARNED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
■WANGANUI, This Day
George Melville Strathmore, manager of AVool worths, Ltd., at Wanganui, was fined £5 by Mr. Salmon, S.M., arising out of the recent prosecution for having an indecent document in his possession for sale, the magazine "Gangster Stories."
The prosecution was authorised by the Solicitor-General.
The Magistrate said that he had no doubt that, in the hands of young and impressionable people and of the less intelligent section of the community, the tendency of this publication would be to deprave and corrupt their minds. Ho accepted it that the defendant and Woolworths were ignorant of the nature and contents of the publication. Tho offence therefore was not committed wilfully. Some penalty was necessary as a warning to booksellers to exercise more care in the supervision of publications for sale.
