AWARD RATES
FARMERS' OPINIONS
A suggestion that award rates should vary in sympathy with the cost of living was made at a meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Farmers'
Union last evening.
Mr. B. H. Feisst (Waikato), in. supporting the proposal,, said that there was no elasticity in the Arbitration Court system in New Zealand.. The proposed sliding system was in operation in Australia, where 'it was working smoothly. In New Zealand there could be variations according to variations in the cost of living.
Mr. "W. Morrison (Wanganui) .pointed out that previously the union had not taken up the attitude that the cost of living was the only basis on which to fix wages. There was always the ability of the industry to pay to-be considered.
Mr. D. Dickie (Gore) said that the cost of living had no relation to the value of the work done. He moved; that- the matter be held" over pending the receipt of further information.
His motion was carried.
