PATIENT IN .HOSPITAL
TWO ATTEMPTS IN ONE NIGHT
WOMAN ARRESTED

AUCKLAND, This Day.
A.fter an unsuccessful attempt last night a prisoner named Eoy George Cudby escaped from the Auckland Hospital at 3 o'clock this morning.* :He has not' been seen since. The wife of a half-caste Maori was arrested shortly afterwards near the Hospital. She was found to have an attache case containing a complete woman's outfit, including two overcoats, and also a man's shoes, razor, rouge, powder, and also a note from herself to- her Husband wishing him luck and advising him'to take care of himself.
Cudby was sentenced on 14th December last on a charge of escaping while in custody from the Wellington Hospital in 1929, and also on charges of breaking, entering, and theft, and procuring a revolver. The sentences totalled three years in addition to the term he was serving when he escaped in 1929. •
On Sunday Cudby's left eye was removed. Ho was in a ward on the first floor, and three warders were guarding him in eight-hour shifts. Last night he dashed from his bed, but the warder caught him under a bed in another ward. At 3 o'clock he went to the lavatory, the warder remaining outside. Thinking that he might be escaping through a window; the warder went round to the window. Cudby escaped through .the door, went to an open window, and slid to the ground. tiiT 38 dressed only-in Jiis pyjamas. The police allege-that the escape was iully planned. ;
