ANOTHER WIN

CORNWELL CUP,

PORIRUA'S SUCCESS

THIS MORNING'S EACE

This morning's Cornwell Cup race resulted in a second win for tho Porirua crew, who led Plimmerton over the finishing line by smiu 51sec. The Wellington and Manukau crews were the only others in the race in the final stages. Although there were no capsizes there were several mishaps in'-the rough sea and fresh northerly wind, and Auckland, Christchurch, Otago, and Lyttelton ■ retired, the last-named with a broken mast. Boats were drawn as follows:— Auckland,1 Wee May; "Plimmerton, Nukumaij Manukau, Waitui; Porirua, Shirley; Wellington, Buna; Christchurch, Wairoaj' Lyttelton, Winsome; Otago, Wet-U. A windward and leeward course was set, from a starting line off the Evans Bay clubhouse to a buoy in Shelly Bay, down to Shag £oint, and back twice, and finally to Shag Point and a finishing line off'the clubhouse. I ' V ' : '■ The start was a good one, Otago, Auckland, and Plimmerton being the eariy leaders and Manukau last. All boats worked the western shore before standing over on a long board to fetch the Shelly Bay buoy. Paremata were first round linin 22sec ahead of Lyttelton, with Plimmerton nearest of the others, who were in a bunch. Manukau were still last. , ; BEFOIU3 THE WIND. > The wind freshened considerably on the run, and the sea near the eastern shore caused the crews a good deal of .trouble. Several of the boats nearly capsized, .and skilful handling was required to keep them right side up. The Christchurch and : Otago boys, iv particular, very nearly' met with disaster and only saved themselves by smart seamanship. Lyttelton were unlucky in the "Winsome, a boat in which they were accustomed tp sailing, for they were running in second position and going well when the mast broke. They were picked up by the launch Taua. All the boats except Wellington's carried spinnakers at the beginning-of the run; and all except the Shirley took them!'in before half the distance was covfered. ■■' This gave the Porirua crew a big lead at the Shag Point buoy, and they rounded 7min ahead of Otago. Plimmerton, were a further 35see back, third, and Wellington and Christchurch together next. Manukau met with trouble at the beginning of the' run and fell further behind. ..Auckland Tetired after rounding the Shelly Bay buoy. ■ Without exception, the crews . favoured the western shore on the beat back to Shelly Bay, on which Porirua increased their lead, rounding lOmiri ahead of Plimmerton, who had displaced Otago in second place. Wellington, nearly 18min behind the leaders, were third away on the second run, just in front of Otago. Christchurch and Manukau were fifth and sixth respectively'round the mark, but retired soon afterwards. No spinnakers were carried'on'the run. : ' ' Parkin, the Porirua skipper, was content to nurse Ms boat during the: restof the race, and at the Shelly Bay buoy the last time the Plinimerton boat was only 6min losec behind. Although hopelessly out of the running, Wellington (third) arid Mariukau (fourth) continued to tail the leading boats, arid they successfully completed the course. . The- official finishing times'were-as follows: ' ■ ' N Porirua, 12hr 27min 23sec :.;.. .v.% 1 Plimmerton, 12hr; 33rniri 14seV .-.;. 2 Wellington, 12hr. 47min 32see .... 3 Manukau, lhr 3min . ............ 4 In the' three, races', the ' Plimmerton crew have been, .third, fourth, and second. , -.- " r , CHANGE r OF-SAIL; = ;, An application by the Wellington crew for permission to change their sail on the ground that it .was setting badly, was granted to-day by the Dominion Conference.' '.', ' '■'... FOURTH RACE POSTPONED. ' It had been proposed to hold the fourth race over the iHeretaunga Boating Club's course atPetone this afternoon, but conditions were too boisterous for the boats to-be towed up. theharbour, and it was decided finally to abandon t"he idea of:,sailing a race at Petone. This decision; was reached on account of the length of/time which would be occupied in .getting the boafe to and from the course and the necessity of finalising the, contest this week. The race was postponed:untii 11 o'clock to-morrow morning. It; will be sailed in Evans ,Bay, finishing off point Jerninghain. This afternoon was .devoted to repairing boats and gear. If necessary, a fifth; race will.; be, held tor morrow; afternoon in Evans-Bay, start-: ing at 3 o'clock, The,,cup goes -to, the first crew.to win three races, .and.-as Porirua have now secured' two wins, both by a convincing margin, the end of, the contest appears to be.in.sight., ; -PRESENTATIONHiP CUP.
