EVACUATION OF CITY
PANDEMONIUM IN DARK
(Received 3rd Februax-y, 9 a.m.) SHANGHAI, 2nd February. Semi-official reports from Nanking state that the bombardment last night started as a result of Japanese marines firing on Chinese troops along the waterfront. This was immediately followed by shellfire against the Lion Forts. ■•' » . . Pandemonium was loosened when the city was plunged in darkness, the Chinese rushing from their houses and scrambling and fighting to escape to the outer regions. The great Changshun presented a river of floating tiumanity with every type of vehicle loaded with baggage and people. The city was practically deserted at daybreak. Japanese marines landed after the
shelling, and are now along the waterfront facing the Chinese soldiers. A clash is inevitable. It is reported that the shelling did comparatively little damage.
