AFFAIR AT NANKING

JAPANESE BOMBARDMENT

LANDING OF MARINES

, LONDON, 2nd February. According to the Nanking correspondent of the "Daily Mail,".following a clash between Japanese and Chinese on the waterfront, Japanese marines rushed ashore supported by 20 shots in two hours from Japanese warships. The shooting created panic among the Chinese inhabitants, and impelled the/authorities to cut off all electric lights in order to prevent the warships from finding targets. Nevertheless Fort liion^Hill is believed to have been hit. The demonstration ostensibly was launched in order to prevent the Chinese-^troops from strengthening the garrison, which is installed in trenches and among sandbags along the waterfront.. The British and other Consular staffs are_ contemplating the evacuation of their nationals.
