VETERANS' GALA, DAY
OPENING. FUNCTION
One of the most popular fixtures of the bowling year, Veterans' Day, -was opened by the president of the Wellington Bowling Centre (Mr. 11. "j.l Hodgißs) at the Wellington green this afternoon. On this day the annual game for elderly bowlers is played. Rain commenced to fall shortly before the games were started. On behalf of the centre, Mr. Hodgins, extended a welcome "to the Veterans, Sineo the gathering last year, he said, many of their number, .had joined, the great, -Among those'''lie referred to were the late Mr. W. Freeman (Thorndon), Mr. Thomas Bush (Wellington), Mr. G. Hendry (Hataitai), Mr. T. S. Eonaldsbn (Thorndon), Mr. D. McLean (Wellington), Mr. A. Lawson (Wellington), Mr. F. North (Seatoun), and Mr. F. Hunt (Newtown). "There arc from 20 to 25 new players here to-day, and I want, to congratulate them on joining -the ranks of the juniors," said Mr. Hodgins. Mr. Mills (Johnsonville), the oldest member (89) taking part, rolled up the first-bowl and play began. Bain prevented play from being continued for very long,,and "at the time of going to- press a meeting as being held to decide whether to resume play later on in the afternoon" if the lain ceases, or to postpone the games until a later date.
