Y.W.C.A. CONFERENCE
A SUCCESSFUL CLOSE
The Y.W.C.A. Conference of Federated Clubs and "Girl Citizens," held at St. Matthew's College, Masterton, was brought to a close at arid-day on Tuesday. The last session, was a combined council meeting of both seniors and "Girl Citizens." At this, further means of co-operation for mutual benefit, and the progress of the T.W.C.A. as a whole, were discussed. On Monday night all the delegates took part in a special "final gathering," in -which parts of the Federated Clubs Assembly service and the "Girl.Citizen Community Gathering" were co-ordinated. An inspiring talk, from Miss Stevenson was folowed by the beautiful candle-light-ing ceremony.
1 The combined display of handwork I this year was a very fine one, both with regard to quality and the nnga of artistic work contributed. The display included numerous types of eewing and knitting, raffia work, mar~ quetry, collections of photographs, and leaves of native trees, posters, etc., as well as original efforts .showing much ingenuity. -" ■ ; Cricket, swimming, and-'tennis occupied, the recreation hours of eonferenee, as well as. visits to the town and to ta« beautiful Maatertttn Domain. A pleasant interlude was » yieuic to Solway Bash, where, a happy afternoon and evening were spent. " - Uniform parade Is an important feature of conference for "Girl Cit*> zets. f> The parade was take* by Hub Leila Bxidgmaa and Mrs. X. Dawsoa, before the delegates attended the evening service at St.'Matthew'a Church on Sunday. The. xeaulta -were:—Christchurch and Ducedin, first' (equal), 14 points; Palmeraton. North; and Anekland and WeUicagtomj, 13 point* each. The song contest jrovidetl a friendly competition ia another Eae. Auckland won the. Maori song, wit* " Wellington secondhand th» original song was won by Palmerstoa North, witk Dunedin second. At the conference banquet on Monday evening the whole scheme of decoratiun, worked out by the^ ceremonial and house, tommittees, was illustrative of conference theme, "The. New Dawn Breaking,** Tha items provided by the varies* living groups and secretarial staff proved extremely amusing. On Sunday afternooa the "Hobby Groups' ' provided a suitable programme illustrative of the work in hobbyhoura—tha whole wearing into a very pleasant hour. AIL the leaders of the groups wore specialists. , The delegates were- very fortunate in being given the opportunity, which. they* eagerly accepted* of examining the remarkably fin* library that Mr. Ctemas, of Maaterton, possesses; The library includes, many books; many hundreds of years old, and such editions as the Bug Bible, the Breeches Bible, 'asd the Treacle Bible. At the. close of conference many of the girls had to return to work, bat a large percentage remained ia residence at St. Matthew's for two days' holiday. For the- secretaries, however, ithe fin* of these was occupied with a 'secretarial conference.
