Hail way appointments announced at the timo of Mr. Sterling's retirement from tho position of general manager havo now been completed by the transfer on promotion of tho men to their new positions. Tho following are the details of the sorvico which entitlod them to their steps up:— STAFF SUPERINTENDENT. Mr. A. Urquhart, Superintendent of Staff of tho Railways, joined the Railway service in 1890 as a cadet in the Dunedin district, and in 1910 was appointed Assistant Kelieving Officer in Dunedui. In 3911 he became stationmaster at Hyde, and in 1913 occupied a similar position at Milburn. From 1915 to 191S inclusive ho was Assistant Relieving Officer iv tho Dunedin district, being thereafter appointed as a clerk in the District Traffic Manager's office at Duuedin. Iv 1921 he was promoted to a similar position at Wanganui, and in 1924 was transferred to the Head Office at Wellington. In 1927 he was promoted to tho position of Second Assistant Staff Superintendent, and his association with the staff administration since then has been continuous. Mr. Urquhart has had exceptional experience in Railway staff matters. For four years he represented the Department before the Railway Appeal Board, and has recently completed a comprehensive survey of the stafE establishment of the Department throughout the Dominion. TRAFFIC SUPERINTENDENT. Mr. J. C. Schneider, Traffic Superintendent of Railways, joined the service in 1897. Ho was attached to the District Traffic Manager's office at Christchurch for a number or. years, and then it 1909 was appointed Assistant Relieving Officer in the Christchureh District. In 1910 he was agaiu appointed as clerk in the District Traffic Manager's office at Christchureh, where he remained until 1921, when he served as Assistant Relieving Officer for a year iv the same district. In 1925 Mr. Schneider was transferred from the District Traffic Manager's office at Christchureh to tho Transportation Branch at Head Office. In 1928 he was appointed Outdoor Assistant District Traffic . Manager at Wellington, and in 1930 was promoted to be Goods Agent at Wellington. Immediately prior to taking up his present appointment, Mr. Schneider has been acting as District Traffic Manager in the WelMngton District. DISTRICT TRAFFIC MANAGER. Mr. W. Schierning, District Traffic Manager at Wellington, joined the Railway, service in IS9S as a cadet at Mas* terton. After a period as clerk and Assistant Relieving Officer iv the Wellington District, he was appointed Statioumastcr at Shannon in 1912. In 1913 ho was Stationmaster at Hukanui, being then transferred to Wellington Goods Department, where he remained for eight years. In 1921 Mr. Schierning was appointed to a position as clerk in the District Traffic Manager's Office at W-ellington, being appointed Train Control Officer in 1927. He was promoted to the position of Transport Officer in the same office in 1929. Immediately prior to his present appointment Mr. Schierning has been acting as Goods Agent at Wellington. AUCKLAND TRAFFIC MANAGER. Mr. G. T. Wilson, District Traffic Manager -xb Auckland, joined the Railway service as a cadet at Dunedin in 18.99. He was subsequently at SeacljfE jin.d Palmerston, and in 1908 was made. Assistant Relieving Officer in the Dunedin district. In 1911 he was appointed Stationmaster at Allanton, whero he remained until 1915, when he waa appointed successively clerk in the Dunedin Passenger and then, in the District Traffic Manager's Office- at Dunedin, in 1917 Mr. Wilson was transferred to Railway Head Office at Wellington, where he remained until 1924, wlien he was appointed clerk in the District Traffic Manager's Office at Wariganui. Soon after this he was appointed Chief Clerk in the Commercial Branch at Head Office, and in 1927 was promoted to Senior Business Agent in the same branch. During the greater part of 1929 Mr. Wilson was engaged on special duties at Head Office, and at the beginning of 1931 was promoted to Indoor Assistant District Traffic Manager at Wellington. Immediately prior to his present appointment he has been acting as District Traffic Manager at Wauganui. OHAKUNE TRAFFIC MANAGER. Mr. W. P. Miller, Traffic Manager of the Ohakune district, joined the Railway service as a cadet in the Dunedin Goods Department in 1897. Ho was appointed a clerk in the Head Office at Wellington in 1903, and remained there until 1920, when he was transferred to Hastings. Whilst at Head Office Mr. Miller was secretary of two Royal Commissions, one of which inquired into the condition of rolling stock and the other into the coal shortage. In 1922 he was appointed Stationmaster at Stratford, and in 1924 to a similar position, at Newmarket. In 1925 he was transferred to tho Train. Running Office at Auckland, nnd in 1926 was promoted to be Stationmaster in Charge at Gisboruc. In 1928 he was appointed assistant secretary to the Railway Board at Head Office, and later, in the same year was appointed Divisional Clerk at Head Office. In 1929 Mr. Miller was made Relieving Officer attached to the General Manager's Office. Prior to taking up his present position, Mr. Miller has been acting as Bus Manager in charge of the Department's road motor services.
