A GUIDE WHARE

TE RURU .KOWHANGA1

An interesting advance in the history of Girl Guiding, so far' as Wellington district is concerned, is the opening of a whare, named "Te Rum Kowhanga," or the "Owl's Nest." This is.situated at Wainui-o-Mata, and is tho result of the combined efforts of the BrownieGuiders of ■- tho .Wellington . Division. There is a sign placed along the road, bo that visitors can find their way easily, and the whare' is set.' back against a hill amid lovely scenery. There is ..first a little rustic bridge,; which leads to an avenue bordered on-either side by-beautiful ferns and manuka. There is also an orchard and a place for games and exercises. -Mrs.-Morgan is Commandant of: the whare,1 and when it was opened a little while ago there, was some pleasant ceremony! A guard of honour was formed by the BrownieGuiders, Guides,^ and ..Brownies, through which walked Mrs..Morgan, led by Miss Enid Bell (Deputy Chief Commissioner for New Zealand), Miss E. M.'Scaly (District Commissioner), .and Mrs. Huggins (District Captain). In the orchard a "fairy- ring." was formed, and the Guiders sang their'welcoming song, and gave the "Grand Howl" for the visitors. Thanks were; expressed'by Miss Bell to all who had helped towards the accomplishment of such a fine asset to the Wellington companies. She specially mentioned Mr. and. .Mrs. Heathcote, who.had given the ground free of charge, and had also assisted in,many stages of the buiiaing. A pleasing little ceremony .was the presentation to Mrs. Morgan of- the Laughing Owl Warrant and.Cords, itbis feeing a surprise to her.' 'Miss JMoana.Morton was handed her Brown Owl's warrant, and later two Brownies presented Miss Bell with a golden key, and a bouquet of flowers was given to Mrs. Heathcote. Miss Bell then declared, the whare open, and all went inside, finding* much to praise in the fine open fireplace, bunks, and many other provisions for comfort.
