RIOTS IN HONOLULU

HONOLULU, 21st December

Two hundred arrests were made during a series of naval riots which embroiled Honolulu, following the dismissal of a charge against a Japanese youth. All leave was cancelled. A Japanese youth was recently released on a technicality following an alleged assault on the wife, of a young, naval officer. The latter's friends kidnapped the Japanese, stripped and beat him, then left him unconscious, and were only stopped from hurling him over a 1000 ft cliff by the arrival of police, in. respouse to riot calls.

All leave was cancelled at the ,navy station, and Commander Wilson, of Pearl Harbour, took personal charge of the situation.

Fighting continued for two days, outbreaks occurring iv eight different, sections of the city. The biggest battle was in a down-town melee, when 1000 participated. Shore patrols arrested 200, ~ - • ' • ■ - .
