LANDING GROUND WANTED
Squadron-Leader M. C. McGregor, flying a Spartan aeroplane, arrived at Westport from Karamoa on Thursday morning with the object of investigating the landing facilities in Westport for air mail purposes. It was intended to run a service from Wellington to Nelson, AVestport, Hokitika, and return towards the end of January. SquadronLeader McGregor, in an. interview with a Westport "Times" representative, expressed keen disappointment that nothing had been done in Westport to provide a landing ground, for aeroplanes. He said that it had been his intention to land on the golf course at the race course, but ' c found that bunkers liad been placed across the onjy possible runways. He was thus compelled to go to the beach, and fortunately the tide was favourable. He was relying on using the racecourse when, running tho air mail, but since he was now debarred, the beach was tho only alternative, and he was doubtful if it could be used as it would be necessary to land, proceed to Hokitika, and return on the same tide. On account of this unsatisfactory position, Squadron-Loader McGregor said that it was now quite likely that Westport would be cut out of his itinerary. . .
The position in Westport, he said, was very discouraging to those who were trviag to foster aviation.
