United Press .Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright. MELBOURNE, 2nd January. There was pleasant weather and a good wicket for the resumption o£ the Test match. South Africa v. Australia. Viljoen showed splendid form from the outset. There was great excitement when tho batsmen ran six, including two for an overthrow. The next ball was" driven to the fence, both strokes being by Viljoen oil Ironmonger. The third century -was brought up after 409 minutes of play. Viljoen readied his century amid enthusiasm in 193 minutes. This is the first century in the Tests made by any of the visitors on this tour. Viljoen was caught in the slips after a chanceless and valuable innings lasting '205 minutes. He hit nine boundaries and added 40 in 75 minutes. Off the first ball after lunch McMillan was well caught at short stop. Hi batted for two hours, but rendered excellent service by holding his wicket up for Viljoen. The last wicket added 22 in 3S minutes, by Bell and Quinn, who made their highest scores of the tour. The bowling was uniformly good, but the batsmen showed more confidence. The inniugs closed at 3 o'clock, the full tiniß for the innings being 500 minutes. In opening Australia's second innings, Ponsford showed splendid form, his partnership with Woodfull realising 51 runs. Ponsford batted for 55 minutes and hit two 4's. He was dismissed by a magnificent one-hand catch in the slips,, a fieldsman diving and taking the ball when lying at full length. Woodfull was solid as usual. Bradman gave a frco display, although the bowling was of a high standard. A century was reached in 02 minutes, tho last 50 being scored in 38 minutes. Woodfull then opened out and kept pace with his partner for some time. A century hit up by the partnership was scored in 74 minutes, and the deficit was wiped out in 134 minutes as the result of most exhilarating batting, Bradman making many powerful drives and pulla. Bradman made a great race for his century, creating wild enthusiasm. He batted for 98 minutes and hit ton 4's. Woodfull batted for lai minutes and hit two 4's.
