MATCH WITH ENGLAND
DOUR DEFENCE OVERCOME
TERRIFIC ENCOUNTER
United Tress Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, 2nd January. Tho Springboks, maintaining uu unbeaten international record, won the key match of their tour, defeating England by 7 points to nil in a terrific encounter filled with thrills, in tho presence of 70,000 at Twickenham. The South Africans for nine-tenths of the game outweighed and oulshoved the English pack, and ,proved their possession of much fastor and nippier backs. Far tho moro effective tacticians, they attacked persistently a dour defence, deadly tackling preventing a hugo score. Tho visitors' vigorous spoiling nullified every English effort to develop an attack, and the home side never looked like crossing the line. Tho Springboks fully deserved a larger margin, but there was a lucky try in tho first spell when Barr, an English back, neglected properly to touch down. This.enabled two alert South Africans to score unmolested. The Springboks secured a marvellous goal in tho last threo minutes, when, in semi-darkness, Brand gathered the ball from a free-kick and dropped a beautiful goal from 40 yards. It. D. Gent, in the "Sunday Times," says the Springboks beat England fairly and squarely. "A better side, if not quite to the extent of seven points, won by the weight and stamina of its forwards and by tho captaincy of Osier."
