NEW YEAR ACCIDENTS
FATALITIES IN AMERICA
NEW YOKK, Ist January. Preliminary reports indicate that more than 60 persons were killed during New Year celebrations in the United States, and hundreds were injured. Also there wero 11 suicides. Automobiles were the chief cause of both accidents and deaths, with alcoholism a close second. Among other causes were stray bullets from, arms fired by people engaged in celebrations and fights. New York City reported one alcoholic death, and only 20 cases of alcolohism, against 75 last year. The tragedies include eight drowned when a motor-car skidded and plunged into the Calumet Biver at Coopcrsville, Michigan. Only one passenger escaped, and two families wero almost wiped out.
A motor-car filled with people was speeding along at 70 miles an hour when it crashed head-on into a street car at Los Angeles. Four persons were killed instantly.
An American Airways Company 'plane crashed in a fog at Springfield, Ohio. Five people were killed.
