NEED OF RAIN

BATTLE WITH FIRE

INLAND NEW SOUTH WALES

SYDNEY, 3rd January.

The back country is in dire need of rain in many of the fire-swept areas. The Cobar district comprises an expanse- of smoke and flame with an oasis in which people and stock are crowded for relief, while hundreds of men are fighting a griia battle against the insistent fires.

Bush and grass fires are still menacing many stations and homesteads in south and west Now South Wales.

Fires for a time threatened the Federal capital, and the whole of Canberra's fire-fighting facilities were employed to avert the clanger. With a fortunate change of wind anxiety was allayed. \
