RUSH TO PAY TAXES
PATRIOTIC BRITAIN
COLLECTORS OVERWHELMED
CHEERFUL GIVERS
(British Official Wlrekas.) (Received 4th January, 11 a.m.) EUGBY, 2nd January. The appeal of the nation for tho fiarly payment of three-quarters instalment of income tax which fell due on Kcw Year's Day mot with a most satisfactory responso in London yesterday. Tho offices of the collectors of income tax iv the city were kept phenomenally busy, and it was the most active New Year's Day over experienced. Instances were reported of people arriving with cheques or cash before tho doors of tho olliccs were opeu, and of queues at the counters later in tho day.
Similar striking evidence of the patriotic manner in which the public is displaying its anxiety to help the international necessity was afforded elsewhere. All over the countiy collectors were overwhelmed by the rush of taxpayers. Mail containing payments was taken in special bags to many of the offices.
In some towiis augmented staffs were engaged until after midnight dealing with sums left during the day. It is anticipated that the stream of taxpayers will continue this morning and throughout next week. In somo instances the officials were offered not only the January instalment of the tax, but. that which falls clue iv July as well.
What has most astonished the collectors is the apparent cheerfulness of the taxpayers, aud in some cases cheques by post were accompanied by messages of goodwill. In au office in the West End of London fifteen times as much tax was received on New Year's Day this year as last. In Bristol 10,000 people had actually paid their January instalment before the day it was legally due. and yesterday was by far the busiest, in the history of that city's Eevcnuc Office.
