Y.W.C.A. CONFERENCE

GIRL CITIZENS AND *CLUBS

An important "annual conference of the Federated Club and "Girl Citizens" of the Young Women's Christian Association assembled on 29th December at St.'Matihtfw'g College, Mastextou, being the first time the "Citizens" and Clubsr'haye combined in conference. Their considerations- huvo been of world conditions as well as thoso of the Dominion -in. regard to the Y.W.C.A. The conference was opened by Miss Leila1 Bridgman (National Chief Counsellor.of tho "Gill Citizens"), among,those "present being representatives "of the Board of Governors of the College, and the Rev. E. J. Sice, vicar of St. Matthews.

The theme for discussion by the conference was "The Challenge of the. l"N"ow Age," specially from the point of vicw^and responsibility of girls. The programme was very full, but a generous amount of timo'-was sot aside for sports,, recreation, and hobbies. The ordinary routine of one day covered such things as physical culture, morning 'prayers, study circles, council houis, I hobby and workshop' houis, and the meetings of tho various committees. Through the committees tho woik of the conference was divided amongst the delegates, and the committees acted under the "headings of Cabinet, Recrea-' tion, Ceremonials, World Fellowship, Health, House, and Publicity. Talks" and discussions also had place, and the day was brought to a close with vespers taken out of doors.

Hobby groups were conducted by specialists. The Masterton lesidents, Miss Tankersley and Mr. R. H. D. Stidolph, took tho music and bird study groups respectively, while other hobby groups we're conducted by 'Miss Ashton (crafts), Miss Lynn (book lore), and Miss Law (diainatic). Mrs. E. Bawson, chairman of tho Na|tional Girls» Work Committee, was the i hostess of tho conference, and Mrs1. Barker, late of tho Auckland Y.W.C.A., matron. Secretarial staffs of the diffeient centres of the, association were represented by Miss N. Haidio (general secretary), Miss Hindle and Miss Quayle (Dunedin), Miss Buinley, Miss Bowden, and Miss Bowbves (Chustchurch), Miss Ferguson (Wellington), Miss Ashton (Palmerston North), and Misa Lynn, Miss Law, Miss Lawry, and Miss Thompson (Auckland). Miss Phoebe Ronavne, of the staff of the National Y.W.C.A., was the business seeretaiy. Other special assistants were Miss Scott and Miss Jones (Chustchurch), and Mis. Koven (Auckland). '
