'.'': CHEISTCHUKCHj Ist January. For thecalendar year 1931, receipts^ from. Customs' at ChristchurcH were £313,590 less than in 1930: . Beer.duty was less by £2661;' the motor spirit tax yielded £41,449 ll s more, and the,tire tax £312 lls more. A summary for' the year is as follows (last year's "totals in parentheses): — Customs, £720,563 (£1,034,153); beer duty, £84,841 (£87,502); motor - spirit' tax, £230,755 (£189,305); tire duty, £13,579 (£13,266). The figures for the \ nine months of the financial year are:-—Cus-toms, £531,821 (£748,217);. beer duty, £66,758 (£66,426); motor spirit tax £173,403 (£149,482); tire duty, £8374 (£9648). For December:—Customs, £66,792 (£72,988); beer duty, £10,454 (£9037); motor (spirit tax £21,792 (£20,421); tire duty £962 (£1445).

: BTJNEDIN, Ist January. Customs returns for December and for the past year show a decrease, as compared with the corresponding figures of last year. The f alling-off in .duties for the year is £150,000, but the petroT tax shows.an increase^ Beer, duty for the -year increased by about £5700. The figures for the month are as follows,'.last year given, in parentheses:— Net' Customs, £48,730 17s lid (£51,743 10s); beer duty, £29,221 3s lOd (£21,160 14s 3d); tire tax, £521 13s 6d (£1357 6s); petrol tax, £J6,995 9s ;Bd* (£15,294 Is).
