POLLING RETURNS

(Received 31st December, 8 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Mr. J. E. Fenton, a former Minister of Customs, who, with Mr. Lyons, resigned from the Scullin Ministry, has been returned for the Maribyrnong constituency after a neck and neck struggle with his rival Labour opponent, Mr. Beckett. Mr. Fenton had tho narrow majority of 417 votes. Another Labour stalwart, Mr. F. Anstey, who has always hitherto won by a large majority, retains the Bourke ; seat by the slenderest margin.
