LYONS REFUSES
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright, (Keceived 31st December, 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. What is regarded as a surprising development occtured when the United Country Party declined office in the new Federal Cabinet now being formed by Mr. Lyons. Dr. Earle Page, leader of the Country Party, had a conference with Mr. Lyons yesterday, and indicated that his party would be satisfied if given the Customs portfolio, as the country men were extremely anxious for tariff revision. Mr. Lyons replied that he was unable to agree to this, whereupon Mr. Page assured him that tho Country Party would continue friendly relations with the United .Australia Party, but would accept no Cabinet responsibility. Mr. Lyons expressed regret at the turn of events and said he was most anxious that the Country Party should accept office, having regard to tho arrangement on which the election was fought.
