FIFTH ROUND PLAY

NAPIER, 30th December.

The Dominion chess tournament was continued to-day, when the fifth round was played. R. O. Scott (Wanganui) lost to A. W. Gyles (Wellington) Queen's Gambit declined. Gyles attacking, early gained a rook and two pawns, finishing with a pretty mate.

C. J. S. Purdy (N.S.W.) beat E. S. Rutherfurd (Taranaki). Purdy's game was probably his best to date during the'congress. Although he had no advantage in material his position v/as overwhelming for some time prior <,o his opponent's resignation.

W. J. Fairburn (Wellington) lost to G. Gundersen (Melbourne). Queen's pawn gime. Gundersen wan a pawn and an exchange, and had a commanding position. After sundry exchanges he brought oS an evidently unexpected mate. J. A. Erskine1 (Southland) beat P. K. Kelling (Wellington).. Zukertort opening. Kelling castled Queen's side, and instituted an attack. Erskine, however, won the exchange on his twentieth move, and speedily forced the win. E. L. Smith (Napier) drew with E. H. Severne (Nelson). Max Lange, white, was still a pawn down when the end game had arrived, but was able, to draw.

H. N. Maddox' (Auckland) beat K. O'Halloran (Napier). Maddox picked up four pawns at intervals and • then forced exchanges of all the pieces.' J. C. Grierson (Auckland) beat the Rev. A. Miller (Westport). Grierson appeared to change a possible loss to certain draw and then win.
