SYDNEY TURF NOTES

A. WIN FOR RANCHERO (From "Vedette.") SYDNEY, 23rd" December.-

Ranchero, the three-year-old brother to Vertigern and Panola, opened his winning account at Bandwick on Saturday in a six-furlong Novice Handicap. This was his fiyst run of'the season, and as a gelding. Like Panola, ho is owned by Mr. J. E. Brien, and is trained by G. Price. He should be a useful performer, for on Saturday ho was well back two furlongs from home, yet got up and won in a punishing finish.

D. Lewis has lived so long in Australia that ho has become naturalised, but his birthplace is in New Zealand. Tho Randwick trainer scored twice at Randwick on- Saturday, in the hurdle laco with Wally X,, and in the Nursery Handicap' with Treasury. Tho latter promised to live up to her name, for she has won twice now for two starts. Her sire, Corban, is not well represented, yet lie'is a well-bred horse, an/I a brother to ono of England's most successful sires, Tetratema. Treasury is a fine filly, and very' speedy. She is one of the fastest youngsters seen out of the barrier" for a long time. Dal Lad, raced at one time as Dal Eaton by J. T. Jamieson, reappeared in the hurdle race at Randwick -on Saturday. He was beaten by lack of condition, but should' do much better next time out.'

G. 'Young's fortune& sagged a little on Saturday after the defeat of Wild Time. She was a solidly-backed favourite with M'Carten up, but even allowing for some interference was well beaten.

Mr. E. Watt carried off the Holiday Handicap on Saturday with Spearman, a win that wa3 overdue. Spearman had little to spare from tho still improving Gemlight. They are both strongly fancied Summer Cup candidates. Vortigern was a runner in the Holiday Handicap, but after tailing off early he finished fairly well into sixth place.
