;" NELSON, 30th December. ; (The. .raspberry, crop- in .the Nelson .district , this year promises to be heavy so long as the weather remains favourable. Growers were given much anxiety by the recent spell of dry weather, but the rains before Christmas" s'aved'the situation" for many who rely on their raspberry areas for half "their living. The' crops have matured earlier than; usual, and' in: some gardens picking- has been in pro-, gress for. about two weeks,: the fruit being of such quality "that"pickers have been putting up good "scores for. their day's :wbrk..; ■.'...' , It appears that in recent years' ( tK'ere has been an.increaßed area , in raspberries, and ",'thfe!"high: prices "obtained for the fruit has encouraged greater .production. - This year ; prices, have dropped, and growers who hare-no contracts with the Factories will-have, to sacrifice their crops at a loss, which' will place some in difficulties.' The fruit was celling; in Nelson for 3d per pound'early in the season, which leaves little chance for prices hardening later1 on: A number of growers who have been spoken to fix 4d per pound as the lowest it is possible for the grower to sell at to see his money, back. Many growers who have no i contracts are selling at prices wnich will only "pay"the' pickers (Id per lb) and cost of marketing. The combined circumstances oi a, heavy crop arid general bad times have resulted in.record low prices. ; . ' .. ■:-.
