John Martin, M.L.C., and was born at Fountain Hall, Ghuznee street, Te Aro, on the 20th May, 1858. He and his elder brother, William J., were admitted to the college as weekly boarders on the came day 21st April, 1870. He was studiously inclined, and also won distinction at the college athletic sports of 1875, when he won the college cup. He was removed at the end of the first term of 1876, and went to assist on his father's run at Martinborough. Ten years later he went to Australia, where his life's work was successful and happy. He was interested in music, and, like many another old Wellington College boy, continued his studies in botany unabated in after-life. He was unmarried. He only revisited New Zealand once, on the occasion of his father* death; Australia was his home.
During the seventh decade of the last century four Martins in all, W. J., E. E., Albert, and Arthur, attended the college. All were endowed with brains and bodily activity, and left their names on the school records.
