RELICS OF SHIPPING

(To the Editor.) Sir,—l have been most interested in the recent article on the towing of the dismasted Retriever,to Auckland. Your correspondent in' your issue of the 6th October overlooked one fact when he stated that the Retriever, having been burnt, was left to disfigure what was once a beautiful beach. When the Hokisnga was built in 1929 to replace, the ■ ill-fated Isabella de Frame the builders decided to use the iron knees of the old Retriever in the construction of their new schooner. The skeleton of the Retriever, was not left long in peace, for the" greater part of her framework was used not only in the building of the Hokianga, but also in the building of other schooners in recent years.— I am, etc., ATHOL L. KIRK.
