BILLBOARDS AND SCENERY
(To tho Editor.) Sir, —I was very glad to see that, the question of billboard advertisements has been referred to recently by both His Excellency the Governor-General and Mr. M. G. C. M'Caul, of the Town Planning Institute. Ugly, signboards' are becoming more and more numerous in the country, and unless something is done to control the nuisance it will get out.of hand. As an object lesson in what this sbuse may lead to one has only to visit California to see for oneself how a beautiful State may _be completely ruined by hideous advertisements along the main highways. Throughout the United States I know as a fact that for several years past it has been a big problem how to deal with the matter. In Honolulu, through the efforts of the Outdoor Circle, billboards have been banished for ever from the Hawaiian Islands. With this example in mind, the people of New Zealand 6nould awake to an evil which threatens to disfigure their lovely scenery, and take away the joy from the countryside.—l am, etc., W. F. KENNEDY. . "Safety" _tates that the Caledonian Hotel corner, by the Basin Reserve, is m dangerous place for traffic. There are ruts in the road near the tram lines that need attention. Recently a -motor-oycle skidded at this corner, and: the rider1 • fell off in front of a motor-car which was travelling towards him, but he was- not hurt. "Safety" suggests that a traffic inspector is needed at this corner at'least on Saturday afternoons, when there is heavy traffic to the parks.
