FINE "SPORTS" GIRLS
COLLEGE ENTERTAINMENT , 'Miss Nancy Webber and her phy.i- • cal culture class of girls were responsible for an interesting entertainment ; at tho Victoria College gymnasium last - night. It was given in aid of a build- ; ing fund which is to provide something better in the way of A "home" for | the students where they can have en- , tertainments, dances, tea-rooms, libraiy, and so forth, making tho social life much more agreeable and possible than at present. Tho'Students' Christian Union was tho chief mover in this effort, and it was well supported, the hall being quite full, mostly with students of both soxes, with quite a good number of interested and approving people from outside the university. The need for something better was evident, as Miss Webber and another speaker pointed out, for energetic young men students had had to put down a stage ; floor during the day, with material borrowed from tho Winter Show Building, while tho oleetric lighting was "run up" after tho arrival of the audience. It was all well done and effective, but the need of an entertain- : ment hall was very obvious, Miss - Webber and her band of active girls showed general activity exorcises, single \ deportment exercises, and a charming scena, in dainty green silk costumes, entitled "The Pipes of Pan." The advanced class th«a gave some particularly graceful and effective demonstrations, entitled double deportment, double curtsey, skating dance, and pendulum swing. The Egyptian exercises, shown by the same class, expressed the curious quivering muscles and actions made familiar in many ballets shown in New Zealand. The standing "correctives" were particularly interesting as showing the reasons for much of the awkwardness and lack of grace among girls and women. It was demonstrated how "spike heels" and others of the sort cause a wrong elevation of the body, possibly leading to ill-health and malformation of the feet later on in life. A graceful "minuet" was given in costume, and Miss Webber herself was charming as a "Persephone" classic dancer, with soft pink georgette frock and green scarf. Gymnastic and rhythm exercises and some "snappy sets" concluded a fine programme of modern exercises calculated for health and grace. Miss Webber thanked all for their attendance, and cheers were given for her and for her class, and appreciation expressed for their effort in bringing forward the need of the student's for a better social hall, Wellington being conspicuously less well provided than the other universities in New Zealand. Among those present were Dr. Grey, Colonel and Mrs. G. J. Smith, Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Lawson, Mrs. Cachemaille, Miss Crump, Mrs. W. E. A. Gill, Miss Clifford, Mrs. Anderson, Miss B. Putnam, and Mrs. G. Rcid.
