FAVOURITES AT OTAKI
Judged on the returns for the first day of the Otaki Maori Racing- Club's -Spring Meeting for the' last.three years, first, secondhand third favourites on the machine are the best horses to back. , Three years ago, two favourites, three second favourites, and two third favourites were successful. The only outside winner was Lady Quex in the Pakibo Hack Handicap, who went out at eighth selection.' In contrast the second horses wfcro nearly aIL at good price's, a twelfth choice, two eleventh "choices, a ninth choice, and a seventh choice paying second dividends. T*q yean»,ago, the favouiitcs won three i aces, second lavourites three, races, and third favourites one race. ' JRamesea, at soventh 'selection, was the odd turn-up. The secdhct horses were mostly well-: backed candidates, though Acoray Maui, and Elyrisiior were at fair second r prices. Last year favourites again succeeded in thr^ee events. Second favourites were twice returned winners, and the other three victors Were third favourites. Second bones were again often tit useful prices, for Malayan.-was a seventh choice, and Baskier, Ankinui, and Callamart were sixth choices. < Taken all round the fancied division has done best in the main handicap, the open sprint, and the hurdles. Paiko, third favourite in last year's Ling Memorial Stakes, has been the only winner of these races in the last three years not to have been first or second favourite.
