ASTRONOMICAL SECTION

The annual meeting of the Astronomical Section of the Wellington Philosophical Society took place last night at the Dominion Observatoryj Kelburn. Dr. C. E. Adams, Dominion Astronomer, read a paper on, "The Spectrohelfcsccfpe, referring to, the offer to the Dominion Observatory of such an instrument made by Dr. G. E. Hale, an American astronomer. Dr. Adams referred also to the valuable work which was being done at Auckland by Mr. R. A. M'lntosh in the calculation of ephemerides of comets. Lately, he said, they had had reported by cable the discovery of two comets; but, as usually, happened tbe "■. ephemerides which came from overseas arrived too late to be of any value.' It was very satisfactory to know that Mr. M'lntosh had taken upon himself the difficult job of working out ephemerides. '> i ■ The election of officers resulted as fol-lows:-Chairman, Mr. E. 'C. Marsden, and Dr. C Monro Hector; director and curator lof instruments, Mr. C. G. G. Berry; hon. treasurer, Dr. C. E:'Adams; hon. secretary, Mr. C. G. .G. Berry. The next meeting will be held in the Dominion Museum on 27th October, when Mr. A. Quinnell , will lecture on the zodiacal constellations and myths connected with them.
