BORSTAL COMMITTEE

Various educational matters cairie up for consideration at a meeting of the Borstal Committee, . held yesterday afternoon at - the Dominion Farmers' Institute, when the chairman presided. The gift from ihe committee of some good literature asked for by the teacher was appreciated, and the ControllerGeneral wrote expressing his' pleasnre that tho committee had been able to supply the need mentioned. T£his gift was supplemented by a generous donation of £3 from Sir Harold Beauchamp for Barrie and Kipling books, for tho purpose of reading aloud. The committee passed a rote of thanks lo Sir Harold for his gift, to Miss D. Tan« ncr for a donation of £1 • Is, to Mrs. J. F. Reid (Kelburn) for books and other articles useful to the inmates and to Mrs. C. Richardson who also sent some useful gifts. It was felt a great encouragement in tho work for others to take such a kindly and generous interest. . Mrs. Gaby reported that the .examination in "first aid" had been conducted by. Dr. Ada Platts-MUls, with the result that of the 19 girls who had sat 16 had passed, Mrs. Gaby remarked that the examination had been a very complete one, both in writing and oral work, and she felt that it was a great credit to the girls, and to their lecturer (Dr. Sylvia Chapman) that they had done so welL The committee expressed great pleasure, and' thanked the doctors and Mrs. Gaby for .the trouble taken. Mrs. Gaby was. asked to arrange a "Home Nursing" ■ course, one" of the most useful, after consultation with the superintendent. ,< A report on- the recent party held was given by Mrs.; Tait, who stated that the proceeds were £13, with very few expenses, so that over £11 would be the result. ' Much pleasure was expressed, and votes of thanks were passed to all who had helped to make it a success, and to. Mrs. Dunn for tho donation of £1 Is in connection with the party. .... Reports regarding girls on probation were read from Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, ' Invercargill, • and other places, from associates and committee , members. Most of' these were favourable, some remarkably so, while the failures' showed contributory reasons in most cases. A.vote of condolence was passed with the wdow and relatives of the late Mr. I. Salek (who had been a fellow-worker with the committee for many ■ years) with an appreciation of his work, which the chairman was asked to. convey to tho relatives. ■ '
