BRIGHTER PROSPECTS
BUTTER AND CHEESE
Messrs. Joseph Nathan and Co., Ltd., in reviewing the London market report that, as is usual at this time of the year, finest grade butter is in short supply, and all that' is available is commanding a satisfactory premium. Consumption still continues to be a pleasing'feature of the market; but whether this will be checked by the recent advance of Id per lb in the retail price is a matter for conjecture. Possibly the revival of trade which the Mother Country is beginning to experience, resulting in a decrease of unemployment, will assist to keep the consumption up in spite of the increase in price. Stocks of butter in England are low as compared with last year, being only some 5000 tons odd, against 8000 tons. The cheese market has also shown a welcome upward trend, and with stocks 50 per cent, less than last year the future outlook is better than for many months past. .Realising that New Zealand has a distinct advantage whilst Canada remains on the gold standard, .quotations for Canadian cheese have advanced rapidly. This is all to the good, and should attract buyers to ■ New Zealand. Advances for October are 10% d for butter and 6d for cheese.
