THAMES UNEMPLOYED
TRIBUTE MINING PROPOSAL
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) THAMES, This Day. Owing partly to lack of work in thelocal foundries, the number of men unemployed here has reached the. record total of 511 for the. week ended last Friday. Of these, 333 were working under the No. 5 schemo, ten under 4a, twelve under 4b, while 142 found casual labour. There are fourteen who found no work. The registration officer considers this above the average for the Dominion. : Among the unemployed are many miners, and representations are being made to the Unemployment Board and the Mines Department to place these on tribute. The men state that they are willing to work a full week at 39s with prospects of finding gold if security of tenure in the claims is given them. It will be necessary to find them in explosives, tools, etc. Many are keen to take up tributes at a minimum wage, and this would greatly stimulate tho mining industry, which, at present, is at a low ebb. The local Unemployment Goinmiteo lias approved the scheme, which was formulated at a recent public meeting, and is forwarding it to Wellington. It is hoped that immediate action will be taken.
