UPPER HUTT RELIEF
STATEMENT CHALLENGED Exception to a statement made Toy Mr. £. j; WarS, in "Tho Post" of 6th October, to the effect that "nothing was being clone in the district to meet urgent'eases of distress," is taken by Dr. F. W. Kemp ana the Eev. GV W.'Hunt (Upper Hutt), who write to "The Post" as follows: — ■ ; ',•< "On behalf of the Upper Hutt Bed Cross Belief Committee we desire take tho strongest exception' to_: tne statement of Mr. 8. J. Ward, _ Upper Hutt. We are not concerned directly with that aspect of the, question that relates to the distribution of* charitable aid. The Mayor will ...a doubt answer for himself. , "Our district comprises Silyerstream, Ti-enthain, Wallaeeville, 'arid\ Upper. Hutt, aud the same desperate need: exists in these' localities as in other parts of the Dominion. " Early in July a 'clothes drive' was organised and resulted in- a splendid response. Scores of families, men, women; and children, were supplied during the cold, winter inoiithswith warm clothing, boots; bedding, etc., etc. Since July various garments have been made Up and distributed where required. We, members of the committee, have, since July, made scores of personal investigations into needy cases, and we nave given much time and • thought to the problems brought under our «ot»«eEvery week we have had applicants whose cases have received every sympathy and consideration; Their heeds have been immediately met so fat as we have been able to meet them. Several acute cases of distress have been dealt with, and immediate relief . has ben' given in tho way of, food, groceries, fuel, etc. We are still in receipt of applications for assistance. Our stocks are low, and we need a larger supply of men's' trousers and boots; Women workers have _ spent days at both depots, and we wish to place on record our appreciation of their ungrudging efforts. It is unfortunate that the speaker should make such unguarded statements,- and in common fairness to those who not only feel a responsibility in the present crisis, but who are doing their utmost to help their fellows, we respectfully ask that publicity be given to the facts as above stated." .
