A FORESTER KNIGHT

RHODES- SCHOLAR'S

CAREER

Mr. E. Phillips Turner, who recently retired from the post of Director of Forestry, writes, from Hamilton: In the last "Empire Forestry Journal" I see it is stated that E. L. Robinson, who was out here as vice-chairman of the Empire Forestry Conference in 1928, has been knighted by the King. Sir Eoy Robinson is a South Australian Rhodes scholar who studied forestry at Oxford University. After gaining his diploma be was for a short time in tho Indian Forest Service, from which lie was in 1912 transferred to the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries \n England. He remained in charge of (ho board's technical forestry operations until 1919, when tho Government (as a result of the Acland report that forestry was of so great national importance that it should bo placed under an independent department with a stall of trained foresters) appointed him chief technical member of the Forestry Commisison which tho Government established to control forestry operations. Lord Lovat, a distinguished Scotch forester and forest owner, was appointed chairman of the Commission. In 1928 ho was succeeded as chairman by Lord Clinton, who came to New Zealand that year as chairman of the Empire Forestry Association. Since Sir Roy Robinson has been chief technical member of the Forestry Commission about 476,000 acres of private lands have been bought for forestry, about 200,000 acres have been afforested, 1500 workers' holdings have been made, and, in addition, the extensive old Crown forests have been managed.
