MIGHT AUTOPAY STAY ?

Autopay's ...performances do not suggest that he has the ability within him to stay over a longer distance than a mile, and his pedigree, at first glance, also indicates that he is a simon pure sprinter, with a mile as His greatest" distance. Yet a closer ■ study of his lines might tempt one to advance a case for staying ability in a horse so bred. The fact that he is by Paper Money does liot necessarily relegate him to sprinting class. Paper Money himself was third in Grand Parade's Derby, and his sire, Greenback, was second beaten a neck in Lemberg's Derby. At the stud and when suitably mated he has sired horses who could manage a distance of ground successfully, among them being Circulation, Pink Note, JYloutoa Treasury, Cashier, and Otairi. The point arises whether Trebelli 11., Autopay's dam, is such a suitable mate. The evidence as given by her pedigree indicates that she might be. She is nicked in her own lines somewhat similarly to England's greatest stayer of the day, the tireless Brown Jack. Brown Jack is by Jackdaw, a son of Thrush, and Trebelli 11. is by Thrush himself. Now looking ,at the -distaff side, Querquidella, the., dam. of Brown Jack, has a paternal line of St. Simon, and such a line also has Trebelli 11., whose dam, Dramatica, is.; by St. Simon. And the resemblance does not finish here, for Querquidella's dam, j Garganey, is by Tragedy's son Wildfowler, and Trebelli's dam (Dramatica) is herself a daughter of the same Tragedy. There is so much'in common in the pedi- I grees of Brown Jack and Trebelli 11. that it would not be in the least surprising if Trebelli 11. were some day to leave a champion stayer.
