MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Cases at the Magistrate's Court■ jerfc dealt with to-day by Mr. E. Taae, S.M. Robert Frederick Torpy, alias John Ryan, aged 50, who was charged with assaulting Frederick Burnett, resisting Constable Kent, and wilfully breaking a pane o£ glass valued at 255, was remanded for one week. The accused was admitted to bail on a bond of £25 and one jsurety of £25, a condition being that he reported daily to the police. Sub-Inspector Lopdell alleged that. Torpy had assaulted a bailiff when he called at his boardmghouse,' and had afterwards resisted a constable who attempted to arrest him. During the trouble a window .in the house was broken. •:-.', ■ ■ For his fourth offence of drunkenness, George Thornham, aged 37, was fined £2, in default 14 days' imprisonment. ■_ A remand until Wednesday next was granted in the case of Bernard Victor Cottier, a labourer, aged 35, who was charged with breaking and entering the house of John Berry, 182, Clyde street, Island Bay, and" stealing clothing and money of a total'value of £6 10sJoseph Edward Knox, aged 43, was remanded until to-morrow for sentence on a charge of being a rogue and vagabond in that he was found by »«*£» the yard of a house of Mr.. H. H. .Newton, Roseneatli crescent. The evidence showed that the maid was at home with a little child when she heard someone walking round, the place. A few minutes afterwards the door bell rang, and when the maid opened the door the accused . was there. He seemed rather surprised, and■ "ked where the "boss". was. The maid shut the door, and, being thoroughly frightened rang up the house where her employer was. Mr. Newton came home, and found, the accused hiding in a r»xaaby the house, and detained him until Constable Tomiinson arrived.
