BROKEN OFF IN MANCHURIA KOBE, sth October. The young Marshal, Chang HsuehHang, the Manchurian War Lord, has declared that tho Independence movement in Manchuria has been created by Japanese intrigue. In consequence, the Japanese military authorities announce that all friendly relations have been broken off, and Japanese military advisers have been recalled, which is regarded as the most serious move since the Mukden explosion.
On 28th September it was reported that a movement was on foot to secure Manchurian and Mongolian joint independence under the name of the Chunghe Republic. Later an unconfirmed telegram from Manchuria stated that the Fengtien a,nd Kirin Provinces had declared their independence from Nanking, and other north-eastern provinces were likely to imitate them._ The movement was believed to bo influenced by the Japanese in order to avoid the necessity of dealing direct with Nanking in the negotiations for a settlement of the Manchurian affair according to the message.
