SUMMER SPORTS BEGIN COLLEGE BOXING : : (From Our Own Correspondent.) - NELSON, sth. October.:. The warm summer weather ;experi« enced over the week-end attracted fait numbers of bathers to Tahuna Beack. and to the Maitai Eiver/ Bowling, tennis, and rowing clubs had a glorious day for their openings for the'season. Cricket practice was commenced at Trafalgar Park. Nearly every piea.sur9 craft on the harbour was on the move, from cockleshell dinghies to the larger yachts, and presented an animated scene. In officially opening the Nelson Rowing Club's season Mr. W. Eogers, the patron, wished members every silccess. Mr. La Frantz, the president 'of the Maitai Bowling Club, welcomed visitors from all the district clubs, also representatives from Wahganui -.' and Newtown. The day's play was between a president's team and one . sele.ct.ed by the vice-president (Mr. Brickland). The former won by 1.98 to 165 points. The evensong service at the Cathedral yesterday was attended by Lieutenant; Colonel W. C. Harley, Officer Command* ing, and 30 officers of the Nelson, Marl* borough, and West Coast Begiment. The parade,; iiv full uniform. .."dr£ss, assembled at the church steps prior" |d the service, and entered the Cathedral, where tho Regimental Colours are housed, in order of junior to senior officers. The first Sunday; in October was chosen for the church- parade ( vhich will become an annual tftinctioii, as the date is central to a number'of operations of the regiment in the Great War. The Very Bey. the Dean of Nelson (the Eev. ..F.. Askew) preached an appropriate sermon on ''Patriotism in Christianity." Preaching at the service in connection with the diamond jubilee of Holy; Trinity Church, Bichmond, the Bishop of Nelson, Dr., W. Sadlier, pointed that in a little over ten years the- centenary of the settlement '.of . .Nelson would be celebrated, and very little had been done -in-, the collection, and collation of materials for the history of the first hundred years. He coni» sidered ten years little enough tii»« for verification of data connected witk the settlement. The rainfall at Motueka during September as recorded by Mr. G. S. Huff ani totalled 3.27 in. There were 12 days with rain, the maximum daily fall, being 1.05 in on the 13th. Bright and spirited boxing was witnessed in the Nelson College gymnasium when the building was packed with boys and visitors for the college championship finals. QlConnor; bantamweight, M'Arthur beat Karsten; featherweight, Cooto beat .-Watson; lightweight, A. B. Smith beat Dec; welterweight, M. M. Shand beat Craighead; middleweight, Mabin beat Field; heavyweight, B. Delia Bosca (last year's champion) defeated J. P. S. Stoeker. Mr. H. Oakley was referee. John Vitetta, one of the most popular shots in the district, was the recipient of the championship trophy (Mrs. Lyell's),' and was heartily, congratulated on his win. The runners-up were A. S.
