PROTEST MEETINGS

The Johnsonvillo, Home and School Association held a meeting on Thursday to consider the circular sent out by the New Zealand Federation of Teachers regarding the education system. Mr. G. S. Stow presided over a large attendance; The following* resolution was carried unanimously? and ordered to be sent to the member for the district and the Minister of-Education: — "That this meetiug of parents of scholarsi attending Johnsonville School views with alarm the suggested curtailment of educational expenditure, and places on record its emphatic protest against, any'further reduction in the Educational Vote, or inroads into the educational opportunities of the children. The meeting is not, unmindful of the niany economic and financial difficulties that, confront the Government, .and the need to establish budgetary equilibrium, "but is of tho opinion that any sacrifices necessary should not be made at the expense of the presentday child. To "do so would be imposing a hardship and a handicap that the child would Wave to carry long after the present depression, remains but a history. This representative meeting of parents is'further of opinion that a nation's best asset is an intelligent and an enlightened people, and that in British countries which are traditionally democratic higher education ' makes for a higher social and moral life, and a more peaceful, tolerant, and permanent solution of social, economic, and financial problems.'*

The Wilford School Committee, at its meeting on Thursday night, passed the following resolution unanimously:—

"That this meeting views with grave concern the proposal to curtail any of the existing educational facilities nt present enjoyed by the school^ children and calls upon the member for the district to resist any such proposals that may be brought before Parliament."
