LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m. to-day.
The Hon. E. Masters was in his place as Leader of the Council.
The Eight Hon. Sir Francis Bell expressed his congratulations and those o£ ; the Council to Mr. Masters on his elevation, to a position in the Executive Council. He added ail expression of regret that they were losing Sir Thomas Sidcy from tho Government, benches.. ' Sir Thomas carried with him into retirement the best wishes of tho Council.
The Uoa. W. Snodgi'ass also paid a tribute to Mr. Masters, and expressed the hope that the conditions which had brought about the Coalition Government would soon improve. Beplying, Mr. Masters expressed his keen appreciation of tho remarks which had been madei Ho realised that as Leader of the Council he would have a very heavy responsibility, but he felt he was assured' of the assistance and sympathy of aU members. ; He had a very high standard to. live up to, and in that ho would be guided by the example of his predecessors in office. He felt that ho had a very heavy task in front'of'him 33. Minister of Education, but it Tvould be his aim to bring about economies without, injuring the welfare of the children. So far as the portfolio of Industries and Commerce was. concerned, he felt that it was his duty to construct, as there waa a ■ need for encouraging the secondary industries-of. the Dominion.'.:: . ■_ ': '■■"- '■ ■ Tha'debato on the lion-..
