BROADCASTING
RENEWAL TO COMPANY
AN EMPHATIC DENIAL
An emphatic denial was given to-day by the Postmaster-General (the Hon. Adam Hamilton) to a published rumour that the New Zealand Broadcasting Company is about to gain a renewal of its licence for five years.
The Minister said he could not. understand how the article originated, as since he had taken over the portfolio of Postmaster-General the question of the Broadcasting Bill had not been considered by Cabinet, which had been busily engaged on much more important and serious matters; neither had the question of an extension,, of the company's licence been discussel. The Minister expressed the opinion that greater care ought to be exercised to verify such statements, in which a very large sect'on of the community were concerned, before publication. Inaccurate and misleading statements of this nature had the effect of compelling Ministers in self-protection to withhold information—a- most undesirable policy. Mr. Hamilton added that obviously the particulars on which the article was based were not supplied from any official source.
