TRAMWAY REVENUE
DOWN IN CHRISTCHURCH
POSITION LOCALLY
During the four weeks ended 16th August, including the Grand National race period, earnings , on' the Christchurch Tramways dropped by over £2000, compared with the- same period last" year,' says the. Christchurch "Press." Operating expenses decreased; however, by nearly ■, £3000,- but standing charges are higher this year by nearly £400. Last year's deficiency for the period was £940; this year it is £888. Addington race'traffic receipts declined £68, or 17 per cent.; Eiccarton' race traffic- receipts; £134, or 24 per cent.; and Sunday traffic £186, partly due; to variable; weather-conditions.
The Works and Traffic Committee, in presenting the detailed figures to the Tramway Board, expressed concern at the continued decline in traffic at the rate of £25,000 pcr 1 annum, fand stated that although many economies had already been effected, in addition to the reduction, of. wages, it- was considered necessary to have a further investigation to meet the position in some measure, and steps were being taken in that direction.
Here also there has been a marked decrease in'tramway revenue; in fact, every tramway undertaking in the Dominion is affected adversely. As was indicated at a recent meeting of the City Council, however, very substantial savings have been made on the outgoings side, of the Wellington service, and a very great part of the decrease has been made up. Probably definite figures will be presented at the next meeting of the council, and these, it is understood, will be reassuring.
