"A CUTTING DOWN JOB"
LABOUR LEADER'S PROTEST
A reiteration of his protest against the portfolio of Education being allotted to a member of the Legislative Council was made by the Leader of tKe Opposition (Mr. H. E. Holland) in the House of Eepresentatives to-day.
"I wish to protest against the portfolio of Education being taken from this Chamber, the elected Chamber, and given to the Legislative Council," he said. "I.have raised this protest before to-day, and I think that there is a general agreement on the part of members that not only Education, but also any other important portfolio, should be held within this Chamber and not in the nominee Chamber."
When he had raised this point before it was pointed out that the late Hon. W. C. Walker, a member of the Legislative .Council, had held the portfolio of Education from 1896 to 1903, but those who had stated this had apparently overlooked the fact that the portfolio hadj been brought back to the House as the result of an adverse vote onthe Education Estimates. The motion had been moved by Mr. H. G. Ell, and was carried by 21 votes to 19. "I hope that before long the position will be reviewed; and revised," said Mr. Holland, who added that apparently the change indicated that the Ministry of Education would be little more than a cutting dowii job.
