TASK IN QUEENSLAND

BALANCING BUDGET

FACING A DEFICIT

(Keeeivcd 20th October, 10 a.m.)

BEISBANE, This Day.

The Stato Treasurer, Mr. Barnes, informed Parliament that State taxation would not be increased this financial year, when bringing down the 1931-32 Budget. Mr. Barnes expects, a deficit oi £1,871,159. He said that, every avenue had been explored, and it had been decided that to attempt to effect a balance or to raise additional revenue would be futile. To impose additional burdens on commerce and industry would result -in disaster. He had budgeted for a revenue of £13,829,585 and an expenditure of £15,700,744. He forecasts a decrease of £600,000 in income tax and £23,000 in land tax.
