Strong northerly to westerly winds prevailed yesterday, reaching gale force at places In districts about Cook Strait, but, although the weather was cloudy and threatening- In most parts, rain was confined chiefly to the west coast and southern portions of the South Island. In the night, however, the cyclone, which h«d been centred near Wentport, morej over Cook Strait, and south-west winds bay« since set In at many places in and south of Cook Strait, while the winds have become mucik stronger generally over the North Island, falrl* general rain has occurred since last evening, with many heavy falls in the' western district* south of Cape Egmont and in the Cook Strait area.
